Is there hope?! based on my practice scores

by aim235 » Sat Dec 20, 2014 9:28 pm
Hi,

I started gmat practice a month ago and my gmat test is in 3 days. Till now my practice scores are as follows

Gmat prep 1. (without any prep) 540 Q(36) V(28)
M-gmat 580 Q(40) V(31)
Veritas 660 Q(43) V(38)
Kaplan 1 610 Q(44) V (32)
Kaplan 2 590 Q(44) V(27)
Kaplan 3 610 Q(47) (29)
Gmat Prep 1 retook 610 Q(44) V(31)
Kaplan 4 590 (44) V(28)

I am aiming for 650+ in Gmat, but my scores in practice test haven't been encouraging. I tried improving verbal and was hoping to get atleast 630-640 in last two test, but its not working.

I just want to know, if I can still realistically aim for 650 in the actual GMAT, looking at scores above. I just have 2 days to work on last minute strategy.
Thanks a ton

There is always hope. In fact I have seen someone working on another standardized test achieve in a few hours a score increase similar to the one you are looking to achieve.

That person did that via a change in some basic attitudes and approaches.

Maybe you could do something similar.

That person worked on anger, fear, staying calm, organization, and things like that.

Timing is key too.

Also, maybe you could change your approach to verbal and see it less as a test of knowledge of rules and more as a test of ability to find flaws in structure and logic.

By the way, looking at your scores, the only tests on the list that, according to my understanding, give accurate estimates of your actual score are Veritas and GMAT Prep. Scores on Kaplan and M GMAT tests supposedly tend to come in a little low. Maybe looking at those scores has done something to your confidence.

If you scored 660 on a Veritas test, you have it in you to score 630 and above on the real one.

Maybe for more practice take GMAT Prep 2, and take PowerPrep. PowerPrep is a previous GMAC software that does not have IR. It's here under GMAT Practice Materials. https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/resources. Alternatively, you could do only the verbal sections on GMAT Prep 2 and PowerPrep 1 and 2, and get some Veritas tests and do only verbal on those tests also. Get used to using logic and sheer determination to find the answers to verbal questions and you just might get the score you are talking about, or higher.

Play the test like a game, one that you are confident you can win.

Hi aim235,

Most Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) to hit their "peak" scores, so it's possible that you just haven't put in enough time and effort yet. As it stands, your scores are close enough to your goal that it's possible that you could hit a 650+ on Test Day. The reality though is that most of your CATs are "clustered" in the high-500s and low-600s; since you've been performing a certain way for the last month, you're not likely to behave differently in 2 days time.

If you're looking to make some last-minute improvements to how you perform, then I would suggest that you find and fix the "little things" that you got wrong on your last couple of CATs. Define WHY you made the mistake and what you can do to keep it from happening again. Physically redo the questions, on the pad, so you can improve your "mechanics." On Test Day, be ready to work hard for 4 straight hours. The GMAT is really good at giving you the score that you EARN, so stay focused, take notes, and do all of the work that is required. You should plan to post back here with your scores, regardless of the results.

Hi,

If you can do it once, you can certainly do it again. Your quant scores have been consistent, you may have to put in some efforts in ensuring that you peak on the verbal scores as well. Just try to be confident on the test date and keep yourself focused throughout the duration of the exam.

We will have to agree upon that it does require 3 months of consistent efforts to reach your target score and if your target score is 650+, you are almost hovering around the same. Just stay focused and give your best on the test date. And do come back and post your score here to discuss on the way forward.

Wish you the best.
