Where do I start!?

by BSin415 » Tue Jan 12, 2010 1:49 pm
Starting to prepare to study for my GMAT.

Ive read the site and it looks a MUST have book is The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 12th Edition.
But, i understand that is merely practice questions?

what books do you all reccomend to get started? Get a good foundation of the ciriculum and really know the topics well so I can be ready for test day! Kaplan?

I really know NOTHING about the GMAT...besides the fact I need it to get into B-school. So ANY help in the right direction would really help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The best way to get started is to get the foundations right. You're absolutely right about this point.

For Math, you could go for MGMAT quant books 4th edition (5 books) OR Kaplan Math workbook. You can search those books in amazon and read the reviews. So that you'll get a better idea. Alternatively, you can get a gist of the content in Google books and see whether you like the content and then decide to buy.

For Verbal, MGMAT Sentence Correction guide 4th edition is the most recommended book for SC. Powerscore CR bible is the most recommended book for CR.

Don't forget to get OG12 and its supplements. These books are the must for GMAT practice. Good luck!

"For Verbal, MGMAT Sentence Correction guide 4th edition is the most recommended book for SC. Powerscore CR bible is the most recommended book for CR. "

and OG12?

I just picked up the Kaplan GMAT Math and trying to narrow down a good verrbal book. Will probably pick one of your reccomendations up.

CR=Critical Reasoning Section
RC=Reading Comprehension

Im in the same boat as you. I'd advise you take a practice exam first, so you can see if/how you are improving. I have found platinumgmat.com to be very helpful in my studies as I am still waiting to get my Official Guide 11th edition. I'm doing great with the verbal section, but Im STILL TERRIBLE at the Quantitative section.

Good luck!

I would even add to that... PowerScore SC Bible (which you'll hear on here quite often). I went through this last week, before tackling the CR Bible. I did this because I figured that as I'm reading the CR Bible, I'll be able to "practice" noticing the sentence structure elements I got from the SC Bible.

Best Wishes!!

Hello,

Here's what I'd recommend as far as buying everything in one go:

https://www.manhattangmat.com/Store.cfm

Manhattan GMAT's Complete Prep Set has everything you'll need to move forward with your GMAT studies. The bundle includes the three Official Guides, eight MGMAT books on subtopics covered on the GMAT, as well as six computer-based practice exams and other practice problems. The materials are invaluable in that they'll help you sort through problems and, thereafter, provide you with a realistic forum in which to test your knowledge (i.e. on the computer).

As far as setting a schedule for yourself, take a diagnostic exam and see where your base score is. Figure out your strengths and weaknesses and create a game plan for yourself from there.

And, I've got to agree with the aforementioned: the PowerScore Critical Reasoning Bible is very, very good. It is used by test-takers of all types not just for the GMAT, but also for the analytical writing section of the GRE, and parts of the LSAT from what I understand. A very worthwhile book to invest in.

Total cost for everything comes to about $250, which is worth it if you're serious about business school. Moreover, if you're diligent, you won't end up spending tons on tutoring/classes/etc.

Good luck!

Mike

If you suck at math...

by Angie Soliman » Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:38 am
EZ Solutions...it's cool for u if u suck at math like me [I used to get C- and Ds and zeros and stuff at university...]...all i have to struggle with now is the exam itself [the structure and tricks] and not the basics [i'm pretty good at the basics, now]...

if you want a quick brush upon ur math having been good in math already, then i honestly don't know what to recommend...i took it bottom up, really, and it has been a long boring journey for me going through prep-school stuff...

best of all :)
