GMAT vs GRE, please guide..

Guys, i need some help and guidance here to choose between GMAT/GRE EXAM. I am preparing for GRE exam to pursue MBA. is that a good option or not? also i am targeting Europe/UK for MBA, which is the better option? Also, what is the scope of MBA from Europe/UK and what about job placements? i have 5 yrs exp in IT industry. Please advise.

Also, how good are MS colleges in Germany? any thoughts on that side will also be helpful.

Hi morelloking,

The GMAT and the GRE have several aspects in common, although there are some considerable differences too.

When it comes to choosing which Test to focus on, you should research the various schools that you're interested in and determine what Exam Scores they will accept. Some schools/programs will only accept the GMAT, while others will accept the GMAT or GRE.

Assuming that you have both options available to you, then you should choose whichever Exam you're more comfortable with (so that you have a better chance at scoring higher).

You ask some great questions about job placement and "value" of a degree, but I'm not sure if anyone here can answer those questions for you. Most Business Schools provide statistics/data on those very questions and certain magazines, newspapers and online periodicals do yearly evaluations of Top programs. I'd suggest that you start there.

The ultimate purpose of having an MBA is that it's supposed to help you to accomplish your career goals. Define those goals, then find the school/program that best matches.

Well, for an MBA, generally the GMAT is preferred. If however you are considering other degrees (say an MS in Computer Science) and you want to have that covered too, then the GRE would be the way to go.

The question you ask regarding placements is too general. Buuuut you CAN find some good info on job placements on a school by school basis on the websites of US News and World Report, the Financial Times MBA rankings, and the employment report of the school in question.

To be honest - if you're looking at both sets of programs and you have a little time - take both. If not, a GRE can be a good way to cover both bases but MBA programs really do like the GMAT. It's the only apples-to-apples comparison they have!

For those students who struggle with grammar or logic-based questions, the GRE offers some respite. The GRE places less of an emphasis on grammar and logical arguments.

On a general level, here is a GMAT versus GRE Infographic.

To answer your questions, check with your target schools to see if these schools accept the GRE in addition to the GMAT.

To see job placements, look at the Career Reports and contact Career Services from each of your target schools to ask about the difficulty of getting jobs in your industry and if you do not have EU working papers.
