Practice Test

Hello,
I have Started preparing for GMAT and would like to give Test in the month of November..When can i take practice test if i have not taken any test before starting my preparation ??i mean i have not taken test for baseline score ...

I always encourage students to take a practice test VERY early in their studies (within the first week of preparing). I do this for several reasons:
- Students should know, as soon as possible, exactly what they will be preparing for over the coming weeks and months.
- The results of this test help students gauge the amount of work required to reach their target score.
- These practice tests help build confidence, since scores inevitably improve as the student prepares.

Hi lalitha,

Since it sounds like you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can download 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 4 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Hi lalitha.

Generally what seems to make the most sense for people is first reviewing some of the basics of the math that will appear on the test and doing some quant practice questions and going over the mechanics of the three types of verbal questions and doing some verbal practice questions. After doing these types of things for a week to a month, possibly getting deeper into preparation in some areas, one then, with some sense of how to get answers to the questions, takes a practice test.

I am not sure what you have already done or what resources you have been using. The GMAT Prep software that contains the official practice tests that Rich mentioned also contains a brief math review and some practice questions. So there's one resource that you could use.

One thing that definitely makes sense is using an official test, rather than a test prep company test, for your first practice test, as an official test will give you a more accurate sense of what the actual test is like and where you stand than will any test prep company test.

Hi lalitha,

With a November Test Date and December application deadlines, you have plenty of time to study and work on your applications, which is good. However, you will have to work consistently and efficiently for the next several months to achieve all of your goals. In my prior post, I recommended that you take an initial CAT - and that's still the case. Once you have that score, you should post back here.
