My issue with GMAT Quant panic !

by Duaabasheer » Sat Aug 18, 2012 1:56 pm
Hey guys

Just a quick post- just to get some advice from other people who maybe suffered from the same problem I do and managed to get over it...

So I've been trying this GMAT thing for quite some time.. over the course of a month I've done all of the Quant questions in the OG.. although admittedly I haven't spent too much time analyzing my answers , timing myself and redoing the problems I got wrong. I also did sets of 5 questions ( as a maximum) and would take a break for an hour and come back to yet- I've basically been lazy! That being said, I could solve the problems quite well in most cases except for really difficult ones. I also make stupid errors here and there ( computing errors).

However, when I happen to sit for Quant GMAT ( whether the actually GMAT or mock CAT tests).. I completely panic. My mind goes blank, my adrenaline starts rushing and I just want to get it done with and leave the room. I can't comprehend what questions ask nor can I solve, so I randomly guess 60% of the questions in a state of total panic, thinking to myself ' I don't know.. I just want this to end'.

This sounds SO dramatic but it's SO TRUE. This panic is unique to GMAT, never suffered any problems with standardized tests ( been an A math student all my life). Verbal is a completely different story- I've never actually studied for the test ( Except doing a few random questions per question type here and there) and can score in the 70th percentile no problem.

Anybody else face the same problems? How did you get over this? Do you think it's an issue of lack of thorough practice?

Tips and tricks welcome!

Thanks

Duaa

To begin, you need to start training for a 4-hour test. Five questions followed by a break won't really get you anywhere.

You should also be analyzing your errors and reviewing approaches that work. To help with this, you might want to download/use the Improvement Chart for the OG13: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/gmat-error-log

As far as dealing with test anxiety, there's no one anxiety-reducing strategy that will work for every person. Your job is to find the one (or ones) that work best for you.

That said, you might want to watch this free video on how to reduce anxiety: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gener ... es?id=1252

It's a start.

Cheers,
