Another Uneven GMAT Score Question

by tschuma » Fri Jul 17, 2009 1:17 pm
I scored a 59% Q and 95% V with 680 (86%) overall. I am a bit worried about my Quant score as I am planning on applying to Anderson, Stern and Booth. I have a Quant background, 3.75 from a good state school (majored in ECON with all A's) and in my career have worked for a structured finance HF with some heavy modeling of mortgage and derivative securities. I am actually interested in a pursuing a joint Public Policy degree, with the hopes of starting a social enterprise. I have volunteer experience in microfinance in Africa and also started my own company. Part of me thinks I would just be better off spending the next two months writing great essays instead of studying for the GMAT, but that low Quant score really eats at me. Any suggestions/comments? Is a quant background good enough to make up for a disappointing Q score?

It is possible that you could get accepted and that the schools would overlook the quant score given your grades and work, but it is an obstacle. I recommend retaking the GMAT, because given your grades and work you should do better. Why have the hurdle? Why have something that the rest of your app has to overcome.

Best,
Linda
