Old Material Vs. New Material

by sausalito » Tue Jul 10, 2012 8:30 am
Hello,

After having bombed the GMAT twice - I put my books aside for a while. I'm now planning on diving back in and beating this thing once and for all. I took the 9-week MGMAT course which was BEFORE the new GMAT took affect. This includes the OG 12th Editon, the Verbal and Quant review guides 2nd Ed, and the MGMAT review guides 4th edition (the version before the latest one).

Question: have others had experience with the old material vs. the new? Is it pretty much the same except for IR? Though I haven't seen much about it - has the rest of the GMAT changed in ways that require review? Also -- what material would be recommended besides the MGMAT workbooks and OG 13th Ed? I've been looking at the Kaplan Premier Book as well. Any thoughts and conclusions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

The OG 13 has 90 new questions and the IR section. There were more new questions (around 300 I think) introduced in 12th edition.

Thanks Kasia! Any idea about the MGMAT material? Would anyone recommend getting the new series of workbooks as opposed to the older version I have?

Apart from the CR and IR books, there are no major changes in other books. Maybe you can go for CR book alone if you are very keen to know about the new strategies and you have OG 13. Otherwise, I don't think it would make much of a difference. Check these links.

Buy GMATPrep pack1, which has got some 400 new questions instead of OG 13. IR you just need to know how the questions are asked and for that you can use GMATPrep tests, GMATPrep pack1 and sample topics in mba.com. A day or two is suffice for IR preparation.

Clearly self study and prep course do not work well for you. This could be due to various reasons: insufficient time to study and solve problems by yourself, not solving problems/CAT's under timed conditions, spotty coverage of the material etc.

I really suggest getting a good tutor, to go over the basic and not so basic material. The tutor should ensure uniform coverage of the material whithout gaps in any topic. A good tutor should give you homework focused on a particular topic, 100+ problems, to hit the topic at various angles that may appear on the exam.

Additional problems to practice under TIMED conditions: OG13, Quant Review 2nd ed, Princeton Review 1037 GMAT problems, Princeton Review 1014 GRE problems, Problem pack I for GMATPrep; problems posted on beatthegmat.com and gmatclub.com

CAT's for practice: MGMAT CAT's, GMATClub CAT's, GMATPrep, GMATFocus

Give several months, a few hours a day. In my practice, my students jump in their quant by about 15 percentiles for a month with me, that is if they do their homework :) Expecting more than that for a month would be unrealistic. Also, work on your verbal, if it is low, to give you an additional score boost. Keeping the verbal low would be too tasking on the quant score to get a good overall score. Higher quant scores are exponentially harder to achieve than lower quants.
