Harry started a 6-mile hike with a full 10-cup canteen of water and finished the hike in 2 hours with 1 cup of water remaining in the canteen. If the canteen leaked at the rate of 1 cup per hour and Harry drank 3 cups of water during the last mile, how many cups did he drink per mile during the first 5 miles of the hike?

he has 10 cups, each cup leak each other thus in 2 hour it lost 2 cups and he drunk 3 cup for the last of 1 last mile and remain 1 cup thus we will have 10-(2+3+1)=4 cup left for the first 5 miles...

We are given that Harry started a 6-mile hike with 10 cups of water and finished the hike in 2 hours with 1 cup of water remaining, so Harry drank or lost a total of 9 cups of water during the hike.

We also are given that the canteen leaked at a rate of 1 cup per hour, so 2 cups of water were leaked from the canteen during the hike.

Finally, we are given that Harry drank 3 cups during the last mile.

Thus, Harry drank 9 - 2 - 3 = 4 cups of water during the first 5 miles, or 4/5 cups per mile.

Answer: A
