Candy Store Discount

by anup.shesh » Thu Jul 21, 2011 11:55 pm
In a certain candy store in New York, each orange candy costs 30cents and a strawberry candy costs 40cents. The store gives an offer that if a customer buys three candies then the cheapest amongst them will not be charged for. What is the difference in the discount received by a customer who buys 2 strawberry candies and an orange candy, and a customer who buys 2 orange candies and a strawberry candy?

(A) $0
(B) $0.1
(C) $0.2
(D) $0.3
(E) $0.5

One orange candy costs 30 cents and one strawberry candy costs 40 cents
Buy three and the cheapest one is free

case 1
2 strawberry and 1 orange candy
40c+40c+30c=110c out of which the cheapest one i.e. 30c is waived off so discount amt is 30c

case 2
2 orange and 1 strawberry candy
30+30+40=100c our of which the cheapest one i.e 30c is waived off so discount amount is 30c

Discount1-Discount2=0 hence A

The orange candies are the cheapest candies.
Note that, each of the two customers buys three candies and among them one or more are orange candies. Hence, both the customer will receive same amount of discount.

The correct answer is A.
