Magoosh question - weaken

by confuse mind » Thu Aug 16, 2012 1:41 am
Statistics reveal that burglars are often drawn to a house that looks temporarily vacated. They are not apt to attempt a break-in if it looks as if someone is home. A burglar is generally not eager to meet face to face with a homeowner. Therefore, when I go on vacation, I always leave at least one light on inside the house, and I always feel that my property is safe.

Which of the following, if true, is the best criticism of the author's idea?

1. Most burglars are average-looking people who blend in with the neighborhood.

2. Many burglaries are committed during the day.

3. Police accounts reflect that burglars approach a house from the front, looking first for newspapers in the driveway or an empty garage.

4. Many people who travel leave a dog in the backyard and a radio blasting.

5. Criminal files indicate that most burglars work in teams of two or more.

Answer B is directly related to the author's idea. The fact that many burglaries are committed during the day weakens the author's argument in two ways:
1st option - a burglar might see the light inside the house during the day and it will be clear that there is nobody inside because normally someone would turn off the light
2nd option - if a burglar approaches the house during the day, the light will not be visible and it will not scare the burglar away.
