DS 1000 Section 1 - Q #17 (Post #1)

First of all, sorry if it is a silly doubt. I am just starting with GMAT and found DS is my weak area. Please bear with me.

Can somebody here explain why not the answer C here. OA is D.

Q. At a certain university, if 50 percent of the people who inquire about admission policies actually submit applications for admission, what percent of those who submit applications for admission enroll in classes at the university?
(1) Fifteen percent of those who submit applications for admission are accepted at the university.
(2) Eighty percent of those who are accepted send a deposit to the university

How can this be solved with 1 and 2 both individually ?

I don't think the answer is D. In my opinion, it's E.

Consider 200 people apply. 50 percent enquire and submit applications, that makes it 100 people.

A says: 15% are accepted. That is 15 people out of 100. Out of these, we don't know how many will actually enroll. So this is insufficient.

B says: 80% who are accepted send a deposit. On its own, this statement is insufficient.

When A is combined with B, we get the number of people who have sent a deposit i.e. 80% of 15 people = 12 people. But then we don't know how many people are actually enrolling! Sending a deposit is not equivalent to enrolling, in my opinion. I must say, this is a weird question!

I too thought of answer E, but considered sending deposit as enrolling, then answer would be C. But, at least D is not at all a correct option.

here i also dont think the answer is D. if its OA, it doesnt make sense for me.
my answer is C, thought of E too but i am not sure about the option B. it said " 80% send a deposite to the university" does it mean 80% will go to the university because it prepaid fee??? if its correct as what i am thinking, i will choose C
anyways, whats the source? i made 1000DS but dun remember there is a question like this one hihihihih :)
maybe we should wait for the answer and explanation from experts if answer is D :)
