Hello,

This is from the 10th edition of OG:

If the Lincoln library's total expenditure for books, periodicals, and newspapers last year was $35,000, how much of the expenditure was for books?

1. The expenditure for newspapers was 40 percent greater than the expenditure for periodicals

2. The total of the expenditure for periodicals and newspapers was 25 percent less than the expenditure for books.

I just plugged in some numbers and was thinking that it should be D but I am not so sure. Can you please assist? Thanks for your help.

Best Regards,
Sri

P.S. Sorry, I don't have the OA.

B+P+N =35000

Statement 1
N = 1.4P (40% greater)
=>B+P+1.4P = 35000
=> B+2.4P=35000
1 equation & 2 variables
Hence INSUFFICIENT

Statement 2
P+N=.75B (25% less)
=>B+.75B = 35000
=>1.75B = 35000
=> B = 20000
Hence SUFFICIENT
IMO ans is B

Thanks Niket. It is clear now.
