perfectstranger,

the first phrase Architects and stonemasons is a modifying phrase and you need to put the noun that it modifies after the ´,´

So, for example in the first answer (which is wrong) Architects and stonemasons would modify huge palace and temple clusters and palaces and temples cannot be architects of stonemansons. Only a person or group of persons (in this case the Maya) can be architects and stonemansons.

I don´t want to be mean, but this is a very easy SC question. I suggest you to read a book about Verbal, most of them (if not all) explain this type of SC errors.

I agree that "Architects and stonemasons" is clearly a case of misplaced modifier, but does it make sense...

what does "the Maya" mean here. Whom does "the Maya" refer to, it can't refer to "Architects and stonemasons" since it doesn't sound grt.

Architects and stonemasons, the Maya.....

I agree this is the best choice...but what can be the correct choice.

Thanks
Amit
