An empty bucket being filled with paint at a constant rate takes 6 minutes to be filled to 7/10 of its capacity. How much more time will it take to fill the bucket to full capacity?

7 out of 10 parts are filled, hence 3 parts are left.
To fill 7 parts, it takes minutes = 6
To fill 1 part, it takes minutes = 6/7
To fill 3 parts, it takes minutes = 3*6/7 = 18/7 minutes. :)

Setting up a ratio is the best way to handle questions of this sort.

We know it takes 6 minutes to fill up 0.7 of the bucket:

6 min/.7 = x/1

The "1" represents 100% capacity while the ".7" represents the .7 full.

In the ratio above, we have time/fraction filled = time/ fraction filled. That's not the only way to do it. We could have also went with:

6 min/x min = .7/1

So, that's time/time = fraction filled/fraction filled.

In both cases, x solves to 60/7.

There will likely be a trap answer that corresponds to that result--that's the right answer but to the wrong question.

The question asks how much MORE time. So, it's 60/7 - 6 = 60/7 - 42/7 = 18/7 minutes.

In problem solving, remember to always confirm that you're answering the right question, and that your answer makes sense.

We can create the proportion:

6/(7/10) = n/(3/10)

60/7 = 10n/3

180 = 70n

180/70 = n

18/7 = n
