When you combine the two condition you can get:
-y<x<y since (1) is x>-y and (2) x<y
plug simple number when x is positive and when x is negative
For example,
when x=1, y=2, we get -2<1<2 thus xy is positive
However when x=-1, y=2, we get -2<-1<2 and xy is negative
