Distance problem

by Mr Ahmad » Tue Oct 02, 2007 2:55 pm
Car A and car B are traveling in opposite directions. Car A travels at a rate of 80 mile per hour and car B travels at a rate of 45 mile per hour.

Q: After how many hours they will be 250 miles apart?

I made that question up. I wanted to know how to handle such problems. I think I found the formula.

Time = Distance needed / sum of rates
Time = 250 / (80 + 45)
Time = 250 / 125
Time = 2 hours

After 2 hours. Car A will be 160 miles away from the starting point & car B will be 90 miles away from the starting point which means both are 250 miles apart.

I thought it was difficult !!!!!

Your answer will change if you knew the initial distance between them, when they started.
