Pls answer the question -
13. A rainstorm increased the amount of water stored in State J reservoirs from 124 billion gallons to 138 billion gallons. If the storm increased the amount of water in the reservoirs to 82 percent of total capacity, approximately how many billion gallons of water were the reservoirs short of total capacity prior to the storm?
(A) 9 (B) 14 (C) 25
(D) 30 (E) 44
OA is E

Thanks a lot, Guest! As u have said -
T=total water
.82T=138. T=168
Before storm=124. 168-124=44
Yop we can get the answer! But if u refer the qs -
If the storm increased the amount of water in the reservoirs to 82 percent of total capacity, approximately how many billion gallons of water were the reservoirs short of total capacity prior to the storm?
It means that 82% refers to the increase in the water capacity but not the final water level. So by that, we can get -
.82T = 138 - 124
T = 14/.82 = 17.07 i.e. 17
This is the confusion created in me! Guys still I am not getting the meaning of the qs! Pls help me.
Correct me If I am wrong

amitava, the question does not say that the increase was 82%. It is saying that the water level increased from 124 to 138. And 138 unit is the 82% of the capacity of the reservoir.

Hope this clears your doubt
