I think it is E

When we want to convey repeated things in the past, we use "would."

Some thoughts:

1. Critical Reasoning in SC:

Some times, in the GMAT SC section, there are some critical reasoning.
Example:
As the former chairman, he conducted the meeting.
=> Former chairman can not conduct the meeting. It should be as the chairman.
During his 65-year life span, he would do something.
=> We understand from the first part of the sentence that the man is not alive.

2. If a man is alive, he will do something:

=> Since the man is not alive, he would do something. A, B, and D are out.

3. In case of conditional, we use the following structures:

a. If + present + ,+ Future
b. If + past simple+ , + would/could/might+ Verb.
c. If + Past perfect + , + Would/could/might+Have + past participle of verb.

I Would have done something if he had helped me. => Here, the subject is alive.

=> From this, we can eliminate C.

4. The use "would":

Would (or the contracted form 'd) is sometimes used as an alternative to 'used to' when discussing past habits:

* 'When we were young, we would spend (we'd spend) every summer holiday at the sea-side.'
* 'You would find him (you'd find him) sitting at the bar every lunchtime, drinking that strong black beer and chatting to the bartender until one day he was there no longer.'

Correct Answer is E.
