If the average (arithmetic mean) of the assessed values
of x houses is $212,000 and the average of the assessed
values of y other houses is $194,000, what is the average
of the assessed values of the x+y houses?
(1) x+y=36
(2) x=2y
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is
sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Ans should be B

From question - x houses cost $212000 (avg). So, total price for x houses = $212000x
y houses cost $194000. So, total price for y houses = $194000y
Avg of x+y houses = ($212000x + $194000y)/(x+y) ------- (1)

Stmt 1 gives value (x+y) but there is no way we can find x and y so NOT SUFF

Stmt 2 tells x = 2y.. substituting in eq 1

($212000*2y + $194000y)/(2y+y).. this can be solved to find the avg value of (x+y) houses
