GMAT function problem

by m_aspirant » Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:00 am
I can't seem to understand how to solve following function problem (from GMAT CAT - practice test):-
^ : square
____________

For which of the following functions f is f(x) = f(1-x) for all x?

A. f(x) = f(1-x)
B. f(x) = 1-x^2
C. f(x) = x^2-(1-x^2)
D. f(x) = x^2(1-x^2)
E. f(x) = x/(1-x)

The correct answer is D. But I don't know how to solve it.

are you sure option A is correct?
because that is what is given in question to check for.

and also nothing seems to follow f(x) = f(1-x) especially D
it could have been correct, if it is f(x) = x^2(1-x)^2

i made a mistake below, by counting (a+c)^2 as a+c^2
by taking the right-hand-side of function and supplying (x-1) instead of x. We should solve for difference between two sides to obtain 0

solution:
A. f(x) = f(1-x)==> 1-x=1-(x-1), -1 is not equal to 0
B. f(x) = 1-x^2 ==> 1-x^2=1-(x-1)^2, 1-x^2-1+(x^2-2x+1), 1-2x is not equal to 0 for all x
C. f(x) = x^2-(1-x^2)==> 2x^2-1=2(x-1)^2-1, 2x^2-1-2(x^2-2x+1)+1, 4x-2 is not equal to 0 for all x
D. f(x) = x^2(1-x^2) ==> x^2(1-x^2)=(x-1)^2 * (1-(x-1)^2
E. f(x) = x/(1-x) ==> x/(1-x)= (x-1)/(1-(x-1)
x/(x-1)= (x-1)/(2-x), x(2-x)=(x-1)^2, 2x-x^2=x^2-2x+1, 2x^2-4x+1 is not equal to 0 for all x

D. f(x) = x^2(1-x^2)
E. f(x) = x/(1-x)

The correct answer is D. But I don't know how to solve it.
Let us look at each of the options:

(A) f(x) = 1-x
f(1-x) = 1 - (1-x) = x; FALSE

(B) f(x) = 1-x^2
f(1-x) = 1 - (1-x)^2 = 1 - (1 - 2x + x^2) = 2x - x^2; FALSE

(C) f(x) = x^2 - (1-x)^2
f(1-x) = (1-x)^2 - (1 - (1-x))^2 = 1 - 2x + x^2 - (x)^2 = 1 - 2x; FALSE

(D) f(x) = x^2 * (1-x)^2
f(1-x) = (1 - x)^2 * (1 - (1 - x))^2 = (1 - x)^2 * (x)^2; TRUE

(E) f(x) = x/(1-x)
so f(1-x) = (1-x)/(1-(1-x)) = (1-x)/x; FALSE

The correct answer is D.

It can also be solved by plugging in a number for x (for eg: x=0 and so, 1-x=1)

In other words, we need to check for equations where f(0) = f(1)
