If 6a+b=48, what is the value of b?


1. 4a^2 =50

2.4a=b+2


qa is b. I got D.


My approach: I simplified given information to: b=48-6a, so if I get a, then I can answer the question.

1.4a^2=50 ===> a=sqrt 12.5 sufficient (atleast for me)
2.o obviously suffiicient..

what is wrong with statement 1?

Hey Enginpasa1,
I have seen ur two posts (including this one) I replied. It seems to me that u r sticking to the same problem - When u r having some equ like x^2 = a or x^4 = b or something like this, u can not be confirm about the value of x because the value of x can be both positive or negative.
This theory repeats here as well. Now look by stmt-1, u can not be confirmed about the value of a because value of a can be sqtrt(50/4) or -sqrt(50/4). Hope u r getting what I want to mean!
But now if u go with the stmt-2, using stmt-2 and the equ mentioned in the Qs, u can get the vaue of b. So IMO B.
Correct me If I am wrong

THank you for watching my flaws. THis is very much appreciated. :)
Learning from my mistakes and your pointers, even exponents can have a postve or negative base. THus, hiding the base sign! Please correct me if I wrong. If I get that, then it means I cna easily truck through those questions!

it often confuses me what should be right choice with these kind of questions..isnt there a ground rule for GMAT for questions like this.
Why is it soo different when we have x in equation and when x isnt there?
