If y > = 0, what is the value of x?
1. |x - 3| >= y
2. |x - 3| <= - y

Hi Abhi,

I think there is something wrong with this question. If y>0 then |x-3| can NEVER be less than -Y.

|x-3| is always positive so I think the Q should be y<0.

Also, I think this question has been discussed before in BTG.

1. |x - 3| > y is not clearly sufficient to find one value for x since there are multiple values of x for which this can be true
2. |x - 3| is positive or zero; -y is always negative since y>0 so there is no way |x - 3| < - y holds true
not even when x=3 and y is any positive number

I think the question is flawed. Given the conditions I will go for E

Had the question been

If y >= 0, what is the value of x?
1. |x - 3| > y
2. |x - 3| <= - y

B would have been the answer!

With the change, (2) is sufficient.

As noted, |x-3| > = 0

So, since y >=0, if |x-3| <= -y, then the only possibility is:

|x - 3| = 0

Which means that x = 3.
