process of elimination - POE.

1) Eliminate A & B - as the noun represented by "its" is not clear.
2) Eliminate D - unnecessary "ing".
3) Eliminate E - "both" & "as well as" r redundant.
4) Hence C is correct.

well another reason for that OA answer is that "in that" is not used in academic english, its more of a term used in real-life conversation.

it's one of those words such as "being" that I think are banned in GMAT land.

I don't agree with loki.gmat's explanation of picking "C". In (C) also, "its" is there and the noun referred to byt "its" in "A" and "C" is unambiguously the tree. I am torn between A and C as well but maybe "could" is the culprit as its in past tense whereas the rest of the sentence is in present tense ("is").

We need -ing form (depending) to modify the tree and hence only A and C can be correct. Between "in that" and "because", because is preferred and hence C.
