by prepgmat09 » Tue Jul 27, 2010 3:50 pm
In the search for alien life, astronomers have recently begun studying a promising region, a solar system that is populated by a number of potentially life-friendly planets formed by fragments of an exploding star some 7 million years ago and features many of the geological and climatic prerequisites for the evolution of life.

A. features
B. featured
C. had featured
D. featuring
E. feature

OA after discussion. This is a Grockit question and I am not satisfied with the OA and the answer.

D seems to be the answer for me since " featuring" is parallel with formed and modifies " planet"
whats the answer?

How is "featuring" parallel to "formed", could you please explain? Moreover, should the subject of verb "feature" be "planets" or "solar system" or "fragments"?

Adi, could you give me the question number? It would be good to refer OG if the question is available there.

I will go with D - Featuring.

Because planets are still featuring many of the geological and climatic prerequisites for the evolution of life.

SInce its general truth.. it should be in present continuous form.

Let me know if I am correct

1. Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.
(A) extending
(B) extends
(C) extended
(D) it extended

Problem present in OG11 I think...
Took this one from 1000SC.

General truth is usually presented using simple present. This is discussed in pages 105 and 106 of Manhattan Strategy Guide.

Moreover, I am not clear how "is populated" and "featuring" are parallel. "is populated" is in simple present, where as "featuring" is present continous.

Guys, please help. I got both this question and the one quoted by Adi wrong, and on both of them I selected simple present as my answer.

Hello guys,

I think I got an answer to my question. This was after I saw Ron's explanation to one of my earlier questions on Manhattan forum.

https://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/sc- ... 10245.html

It appears that the sentence needs to be broken down in the following manner:

In the search for alien life, astronomers have recently begun studying a promising region, a solar system that is populated by a number of potentially life-friendly planets

formed by fragments of an exploding star some 7 million years ago
and
features many of the geological and climatic prerequisites for the evolution of life.

features is modifying planets. It should not be a verb but a participle modifier. So, "features" should be either present participle or past participle. But, because "the geological and climatic prerequisites " are something that are still featured by the planets, the modifier should take the form of a present participle.

Thanks everyone for participating in the discussion.
