Sentence correction

by Chinn_asama » Wed Jan 02, 2013 2:15 am
Hi there

Is the sentence structure of the below sentence right? what is the role of 'driven......demand'? Is it adjective phrase and is it acting as adverb that is modifying the entire sentence?

"speculators trimmed their positions, driven by reports of higher output estimates and weak export demand".

Regards

What is the source? If this is all the sentence consists of it is grammatically incorrect with a comma splice.

Just that on GMAT, perhaps the following construct would be preferred:

Speculators, driven by reports of higher output estimates and weak export demand, trimmed their positions.

The reason for this is that in the original sentence, "driven...demand" can be interpreted to modify positions, while the intention is that speculators were driven by reports of higher output estimates and weak export demand.

Yes, driven..demand is a participial phrase (adjective).
