Budget problem

by akshatgupta87 » Sun Jun 26, 2011 11:29 am
Q.)After the budget compromise, sixteen Republican senators issued press releases taking credit for the advances, although only one of the Democrats.

A)although only one of the Democrats
B)only one Democratic senator had
C)but of the Democrats, there was only one
D)of Democrats, only one senator had
E)although only one Democrat did

OA is E
I narrowed it down to C.
Can someone explain?

Thanks,
~Akshat

This is a question of parallelism.

We are to have two parallel tracks taking place.

We have "sixteen Republican senators issued press releases taking credit for the advances" now we need something parallel for the Democratic senators. We could have said, "although only democrat issued a press release taking credit."

In choice E the portion that I have in bold above is replaced with the word "did." This "did" takes the place of "issued a press release taking credit." So option E is parallel.

The other options, for example C, are not parallel. Look at C: the part of the sentence that does not change has the Republicans issuing press releases, but Choice C is not parallel - the democrats are not doing anything, they simply exist.
