It's about verb tense. Let's compare simplified versions of the sentences.

D) 30yrs after the first game, Sacchin became x.

E) 30yrs after the first game, Sacchin had become x.

The past perfect (Saccin had become) should only be used to refer to the earlier or oldest of two related past actions. In this case, note that "to become x" happened after the first game, so it is the more recent (not the earlier) action. As a result, past perfect is not appropriately used in E.
