Flaw in reasoning?

by ellexay » Sat Feb 07, 2009 1:09 pm
No nation in the world has experienced as significant a decline in its Yucaipa tree population as our nation. Yet only our nation imposes a law prohibiting the use of Yucaipa tree-bark oil in cosmetics. The purpose of this law in the first place was to help maintain the Yucaipa tree population, at least in this nation. But the law is clearly unnecessary and therefore should be repealed.

Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion drawn in the passage?

a. This nation contains more Yucaipa trees than any other nation.

b. Yucaipa tree-bark oil is not used for any consumer goods other than cosmetics.

c. The demand for cosmetics containing Yucaipa tree-bark oil is expected to decline in the future in other nations while continuing unabated in this nation.

d. In other countries, labor used to harvest Yucaipa trees for cosmetics is less expensive than comparable labor in this nation.

e. In this nation, some wild animals eat Yucaipa tree bark, thereby contributing to their destruction.

The correct answer is (D). Choice (D) weakens the argument by providing some evidence that in this nation it would be comparatively expensive to produce cosmetics with Yucaipa tree-bark oil and, accordingly, that the tree population in this nation might not be significantly depleted even if the law were repealed.

My answer was E on the grounds that there may be alternative explanations for the destruction of Yucaipa trees that can affect how effective the law is viewed.

What is the flaw in my reasoning?

If the official explanation is correct then I certainly did not understand this CR properly.

Conclusion here is: The law is unnecessary and therefore should be repealed.

To weaken this conclusion we need an answer that shows why is this law necessary(and should not be repealed).

I am unable to understand, in which way D is weakening the conclusion? It is actually strengthening the conclusion by stating that tree population will not decline no matter this law is repealed or not, which eventually means that the law is unnecessary.

I'd go with C. C says demand for cosmetics containing Yucaipa tree-bark oil will continue to be unabated in this nation. Now if the law is repealed, there could be some decline in the population of Yucaipa tree because of the demand of cosmetics. So the law is necessary to protect Yucaipa trees.

I have seen people discussing this same CR in few other forums. People there also think D can not be the right answer.

Can someone please explain the rationale behind D? I am not convinced with the explanation given here.

um, yeah, both (b) and (c) are much better answers to this question, especially (c).

(d) would actually be the best answer to the question of which answer choice most strengthens the argument, for the reasons proposed by the above poster.

it's possible that the question was hastily, and wrongly, transcribed. many CR passages actually go with multiple questions; for instance, there's a known gmatprep CR passage about "kravonian college students" that is associated with at least 2 different prompt questions.

my best hypothesis here is that somebody copied the Weaken question, but the Strengthen answer.

It's not, as is obvious from reading the passage, at all like a real GMAT question (the 'conclusion' is a complete non sequitur; there is no justification for it). According to a thread on gmatclub, the source is Peterson. I agree with Ron and Hardik above that D clearly strengthens the conclusion, rather than weakens it, so either the question has been mistranscribed, or there's a mistake in the original source.

We have to weaken the conclusion, thus bring in some information that says that it is essential to get keep the law because it is beneficial

a)Not relevant
b)Not used for any other consumer goods besides cosmetics therefore it is neccesary to protect it.
c) SInce the demand is growing to increase more trees are likely to be cut. Therefore it is important to keep the LAW. I would choose this...
D) Since labour in other countries is less expensive, there the tree should be exploited more there, therefore there is obviously more chances of the tree getting exploited there and this law does not serve any purpose. so it strenthens
E) IT agrees with the conclusion therefore it should be crossed out. It strengthens

I would choose "C"
