A certain quantity of 40% solution is replaced with 25% solution such that the new concentration is 35%. what is the fraction of the solution that was replaced?

a. 1/4
b. 1/3
c. 1/2
d. 2/3
e. 3/4

Soln: Let X be the fraction of solution that is replaced.

Then X*25 - (1-X)*40%=35% (Is it 1-x coz the total is considered 1, is there any other approach to this type of problem?)

I would solve like this.

Suppose, the original solution was x unit and y units were replaced.

(x-y)*0.4 + 0.25y = 0.35x

solve for y/x = 1/3 ANS
