Kindly let me know the correct using of participle -ing form

Generally participle is a verb which acts as a noun in the sentence.Please correct me if i am wrong.

In case we have a sentence in which we have a participle after comma, does the participle modifies the entire phrase or clause before the comma.

What is the preferred usage of participles.
