I am quoting fleurdelisse's question and the discussion link here: In the rectangular coordinate, does line k interest quandrant II? (quandrant II being the quandrant where x<0 and y>0) (1) slope of k is -1/6 (2) y-intercept of k is -6 http://www.beatthegmat.com/line-and-slope-t35149.html This, I th...

Agree with BM...

statement 1 is sufficient..

statement 2: The line cuts at (0,-6)... It could pass through 2nd quad, but NEED NOT (it might pass through I and III and still make an intercept of -6 with y axis)...

When we say intercept of three, the distance from (0,0) is 3...but, is it in the positive or negative direction??? If a line passes through (3,0) or (-3,0), the intercept is still 3.. but the slopes could be different.... TRY YOURSELF: You can draw two lines: one through (3,0) and the other through ...

If a line passes through the first and third quadrants, the slope of the line could be +ve or -ve. The correct answer to this question is C.

NOTE: For a line passing thru 1 and 3 quad, slope is +ve
For a line passing thru 2 and 4 quad, slope is -ve

DS Philosophy

As Stuart rightly put it, we need not find the exact answer in DS (unlike PS). All we need to check is whether the statement(s) give us a 100% unique (consistent) answer.

odd*odd = odd
even*odd = even
even*even = even

c x (d+1) is even => c can be odd or even...

(c+2) x (d+4) is even => c can be odd or even

combine; if d+1 is even, d+4 is odd...if d+1 is odd, d+4 is even..

=> c has to be even...(even*odd = even; even*even = even)

If -2x>3y, is x negative?

Stem translation: if x < (-3/2)y, is x <0??

(1) y>0 => x is negative....

(2) 2x+5y-20=0
2x + 5y = 20
x < -1.5 y.

put x = -2y => y = 20; x<-30=> x is negative...
you can try for different values...
