CR Topic On DVD Piracy

by manish.jaipatna » Tue Apr 05, 2011 6:59 pm
Hi,

Please help to solve below

The amount of money estimated to be lost by Hollywood studios due to DVD piracy overseas increased to more than $500 million last year. As a consequence, Hollywood studios have little prospect of making money this year by exporting their films worldwide.

All of the following, if true, weaken the argument except:

A. $500 million represents a very small fraction of overseas profits.

B. New laws and heightened international enforcement aimed at this piracy were implemented in January of this year and have been effective.

C. Even in countries where DVD piracy is widespread, theatrical first-run distribution is both very popular and profitable.

D. Last year, all films that were nominated for an Academy Award were known to have been pirated on DVD.

E. Domestic DVD sales were sharply higher last year; in the past, strong domestic sales have been an indicator of higher international DVD sales in the following year.
Thanks
Manish

a) If 500 M$ is small then it weakens the say "making money" as they are making
B) March can be year end.. so if Jan - March is taken what about rest of months ( good one)
C)making money out of first run..so they are getting money
D) Out of scope, we need to talk this year sales of DVD
E) Domestic DVD sales out of scope

1.46sec is my consumption.. Plese post the OA.. IMO B
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

The most important thing to understand in this type of questions is the meaning of the word EXCEPT. The question stem is: "All of the following, if true, weaken the argument EXCEPT".

It means that there are 4 options that weaken the conclusion and 1 that doesn't. However, it doesn't mean that this option should strengthen the argument. It just doesn't make it weaker!!!

The conclusion is that Hollywood studios, because of DVD piracy, will not make a lot of money from film exporting.

A) If this was true - it means that they'll earn more than they'll lose. WEAKEN
B) The fight against DVD privacy has been successful - there is a prospect that the revenue will increase. WEAKEN
C) Even though there is DVD privacy, they still can be successful. WEAKEN
E) Domestic sales indicate high international DVD sales. WEAKEN

D) - it doesn't weaken the argument; therefore, it is the correct answer.
