Verbal Scores in GMAT

by discreet » Sun Jul 15, 2007 7:59 am
Verbal scores are a bit confusing....

I have got varied scores in GMATPrep and my verbal scores are fluctuating a lot...I am getting tensed :?

For example,In quant, if you get around 2-3 incorrect then you may get 51, 4-8 incorrect then 50, 9-13 incorrect then 49 etc etc...usually, the trend is predictable...in verbal I am confused.....

For example, I had 8 incorrect (out of 41) and had got a score of 42 !
Once,I had 14 incorrect, and I got 32 !!! How is such a drastic drop in score possible ? getting 6 more incorrect drops your score by 10 points???

The errors were spread uniformly....I am getting anxious - how are the scores for verbal calculated ??? .... :x

It's obvious that it depends on the difficulty level reached and no. of correct answers but quant scores are more predictable than verbal...This is what I feel !

any views in this regard will be very helpful....

The scoring algorithm is based only tangentially on percentage correct. The major factor is the difficulty level of the question. Five people can get exactly the same percentage correct and be at the 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th percentile respectively. So trying to find a pattern should be frustrating... it's not there! (The same is true for the math, by the way.)
