First Time Test Taker With 15 Days to Study

by abfromcs » Sun Dec 08, 2013 10:39 pm
Hi Guys,

First off, I would like to thank you all for your helpful posts. I have learned a lot of great information from reading them.

I'd like to give you some background on where I am at in the process of preparing, and then I would like to open it up for feedback.

I originally was going to take the GRE, since I thought more schools were starting to accept it and I had already begun preparing for it when I thought I was going to do a Master's in Science, before I had decided to do my MBA. I later decided just to take the GMAT since some schools still do not accept it.

I currently work in sales and work close to 70 hours a week, leaving little time for studying, let alone sanity :)

I told my boss a few months back I would be taking the month of December off to study for the GMAT.

I took the Veritas Prep online test prep program, and was pleased with it, but had limited time to work problems outside of class.

I completed it about a month and a half ago, and have been studying intermittently since that time.

Starting today, the 8th, I am planning to begin a rigorous study regimen for the next two weeks until I take the test, on the 23rd.

I realize this is not an ideal time frame, but it was the best I could do in my circumstances.

I would like any advice from forum members who have already taken the test and scored well on how to best use the little amount of time that I have to do the best possible.

I took two practice tests so far, one from Indiana Kelly that they offered for prospective students, and one of the Power Prep tests, although the Power Prep was the old version of the test. I scored a 600 on the Kelly test, and a 162 verbal and 152 quant on power prep.

Thank you very much. And have a Happy Holidays!

I'm not familiar with the Kelly test, but if you're at the 600 level, then you already have a reasonable grasp of the materials. So, from here, I suggest that you take some practice tests and carefully analyze them to identify your area(s) of weakness.

While analyzing your practice tests, there are four main types of weakness you should watch for:
1. specific Quant skills/concepts (e.g., algebra, standard deviation, etc.)
2. specific Verbal skills/concepts (e.g., verb tenses, assumption CR questions, etc.)
3. test-taking skills (time management, endurance, anxiety etc.)
4. silly mistakes

For the first two weaknesses, the fix is pretty straightforward. Learn the concept/skill and find some practice questions to strengthen that weakness. To focus on one topic at a time, you can use BTG's tagging feature to isolate one concept. For example, here are all of the questions tagged as statistics questions: https://www.beatthegmat.com/forums/tags/ ... statistics
See the left side of that linked page for more tag options.

If your test-taking skills are holding you back, then you need to work on these. For example, we have a free GMAT time management video at https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gener ... es?id=1244.

Finally, if silly mistakes are hurting your score, then it's important that you identify and categorize these mistakes so that, during tests, you can easily spot situations in which you're prone to making errors. I write about this and other strategies in the following article for BTG: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2012/09/ ... n-the-gmat

Cheers,
Brent
