Muddled thinking

by iamcste » Tue Feb 24, 2009 3:04 am
Excerpt for Muddled thinking from your Flaw no.5 Accepted.com

"I am occasionally surprised by people who call me up and say they want to be a management consultant but their experience in IT supports continuing to work in IT. So they intend to apply to schools with strong general management programs and say they want to return to IT. If you are in that camp, you're not being
honest with the school or yourself, and the readers may just decide that your goals don't match their program or that you don't need an MBA to achieve your goals. "

I do have IT experience but I plan to return to same Industry in a different role and on the business side. School is not wellknown as strong general management school.

Do you think this as an example of muddled thinking.

Hello,

I can’t and won’t comment on the quotation you present, but your concept – to learn new skills to take a different role within the IT industry – makes perfect sense. I have seen many applicants successfully made the case for taking on an expanded and higher-level role within the IT industry, for example going from implementation to management and strategy. Moreover, having the industry foundation and experience will help you in those more advanced roles.

The keys to making this work as a goals scenario in your essays are clarifying your motivations for this expanded role, showing your understanding of what the new role entails (so that the adcom has comfort that you’re making an informed decision), and presenting concrete plans for succeeding in that role.

Best regards,
