What to retake - GRE or GMAT?

by ohheythere » Sat May 31, 2014 9:48 pm
Hi all,

I just received a disappointing GMAT score (Q36, V44), and am wondering what to retake, the GMAT or GRE. I took the GRE two years ago and scored Q157 and V164. I hired a private tutor for GMAT prep, and prepped for about 3 months. As you can see, I've always been stronger on verbal than on quant.

If I want to apply for Round 1 this fall, what would make most sense? GRE or GMAT? I'm a weaker applicant on the quant side, and would like to maximize my chances of receiving a strong quant score.

Thanks!

Hi ohheythere,

The answer to your question will ultimately be based on what schools you want to apply to. Some schools accept both the GMAT and GRE, while others will accept just the GMAT. You clearly have a strong Verbal ability, but you'll come to find that both the Quant and Verbal sections of both exams are based on patterns and can be prepped for. Most Top Business Schools put an emphasis on the Quant Scaled Score, so if you're planning to apply to a Top-10, some extra work on the Quant section is warranted.

Since Round 1 for most schools is in October, you have plenty of time to study and take (and even re-take) either exam. So the first question is what is your first choice school/program?
