IT was X that led to Y

The trap is to treat ANOMALIES as a plural subject and use they in option C

It was the GIRLS who started the fight.

do you really want to say:

It were the girls ?

and also that modifies the "anomalies in the orbit of uranus"

E. The anomalies in the orbit of uranus was what
(A) is the only possible choice.

(B) is far more awkward than (A).

(C) "They were" makes no sense.

(D) even if we change "anomalies" to "anomalous", (d) is more awkward than (a). If "anomalies" is what actually appeared in the question, then the sentence makes no sense.

(E) uses the plural subject "anomalies" and the singular verb "was".

As Logitech notes, "It was X that led to Y" is idomatically and gramatically correct.
