who was digging? paleontologists, so that should come right after the modifying phrase and from d and e i think e sounds awkard

Why E is awkward that is my main question becoz it's hard for me to pick D over E

E is wrong because : "appear to be" refers to the dinosaur which is singular. It would have been correct if it was 'what appears to be'

It would become grammatically correct but still wordy. Still the answer choice would be D as its the most cleat and concise option.

But I guess fossils is the subject ..

Fossils appear to be dinosaur ....
