Appliance - Confusing

by venmic » Tue Oct 18, 2011 6:50 pm
(1) Almost every modern kitchen today is equipped with a microwave oven, mainly because microwave ovens offer a fast and convenient way of cooking and reheating food. Indeed, it has become a standard appliance in most households. Studies have shown, however, that microwave ovens are not completely safe and their use has occasionally resulted in serious injury. Because of this, some consumer advocates argue that microwave ovens should not be so readily accepted as a standard appliance until they can be certified to be completely safe.

Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the argument of the consumer advocates?
(A)Microwave ovens have taken much of the joy out of cooking.
(B)There have been many reported incidences of people who have been scalded by liquids superheated in microwave ovens.
(C)Absolute safety is the only criterion by which an appliance should be judged to be acceptable as "standard."
(D)There is no such thing as a completely safe appliance.
(E)Stoves and ovens that use natural gas consume energy much more efficiently than microwave ovens.

Why should this be B

I would go for C

B provides info we already know (Studies have shown, however, that microwave ovens are not completely safe and their use has occasionally resulted in serious injury)

Hence to support the consumer advocate, C says that 100% safety is the ONLY criteria to accept a standard appliance.

Are you sure the OA is B? C seems a better option to me.

I would go with C too.
Unsafe to use and injury by negligence are different. That's why I went for C.
Please comment.
Thank you,

I would go with C.

Advocates` assumption : An appliance has to be safe to be declared standard
If C is true, then the advocates` assumption becomes 100% valid.

I would see B as just another evidence and even if it were true, would not strengthen the assumption.

Please correct me if I am wrong

+1 for C. Since the consensus formed here differs from the OA, it will be appropriate if some expert can answer this.

I have investigated this and it appears that

OA is C.

In all other postings C was given as the OA. In some other postings this was identified as a Manhattan CAT question.

B cannot be the correct answer, that is for certain. The conclusion is that microwaves should not be accepted as a standard appliance and the reason is because they are not completely safe. We need to strengthen this relationship. We need for "not completely safe" to mean "not a standard appliance." B does not help with this and C does.
