Puzzled by my situation

by antest07 » Sun Sep 06, 2009 7:39 am
I am a guy who want to get into MBA in the coming year. Below is what I got:
1) GMAT 600 (Q45 V27)
2) 1 year more of Junior Programming exp and 1 year placement
3) IELTS 7.0

Please tell me how likely I can get into the following Canadian MBA programs.
1) Simon Fraser University
2) University of British Columbia
3) Queen's University
4) York University
I really need help. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Sorry to chime in here without much familiarity with Canadian b-schools, but my guess is that they are not much different than the US schools in what they are looking for. My guess is that you will be offering less professional experience than they're looking for, since much of b-school relies on the collective experience of the student body to enliven and enrich the class discussions. In a very competitive year, if you are posting average GPA and GMAT scores, the work experience is really what you need to set you apart. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but my gut feeling is that an admissions committee would think of you as having potential, but probably better in a couple more years. If you are committed to going next year, you will need to offer a very compelling reason why now is the best time for you to go back.

antest07 - Your GMAT score is average for Canadian schools (it would be considered low for schools in the US). Your work experience is below average. Again - you have not specified your GPA so we have a gap.

Option 1: You could go ahead and submit your application - Take your chances and see how it goes.

Option 2: Have you thought about working one year in Canada or some other country and then applying to MBA school? That would definitely give you an upper hand.

Option 3: Work additional 1-2 yrs in India and then apply to b-school.

Option 4: As you are planning to apply in Canada, you have another option. You can apply to a community college in Canada (since they have really low set of requirements) and transfer out after kicking up your GPA in the first semester at the community college. This will require careful planning and you'll need to do your homework. Check to see whether your canadian schools will accept you if you transfer as an International student from a canadian community college. If you are interested in approaching this direction - ping me on messenger and I can further direct you.

Let me know if you want to discuss this further. You can find me on msn or yahoo messenger or skpe.

Either ways - Good Luck!
