Univ of Maryland, Smith - admit advice

by sadragas » Tue Feb 15, 2011 8:01 pm
Hi,

I have an admit from the Smith School of Business for Fall 2011.
I am given GA for the first yr worth abt $20,000

But the tuition at Maryland is very expensive, $71,000 after the GA waiver.

I would like to know if it is worth spending that kind of money for an MBA from Maryland

I have an exp in IT for 4.5 yrs, with 1.5 yr's exp in the risk management domain (Global Markets)
I am targeting for an MBA in Fin

Can someone plz advice on the following -

How strong is Maryland in Finance?
How do the Recruiters perceive Maryland MBA grads?
Being an international student, how good are my chances to land up with a decent job post MBA?

Thanks in advance.

This is strange that they gave you GA waiver of $20k only for 1st year because usually the schools either distribute the amount over a period of 2 years. Maryland has quite a strong reputation in Sciences and is one of the top universities in east coast. Their MBA program is also reputed not as reputed as the other programs though as Maryland is primarily known for its research work, according to my research. Getting a job is definitely more difficult for an international student and you'll have to really polish your skills and build a strong network during the 2 years of your program.
I think the current students at Smith will be able to give the best insights into the pros and cons of the school.
