questions for councellors

by singsub » Mon Sep 01, 2008 12:08 pm
Respected sir/ma'am,

i would be very thankful if you could please answer the following questions.

1) Is a score of 600 decent enough?? I will try for 650+ though, but it will be tough for me.

2) I am going to be in Singapore for now. Would representatives from any B-school be coming to Singapoe in September-December 2008 ??

3) Should I get all the recommendation letters from my college professors or should there be at least one from a professional referee (my ex boss)

4) Could you name me some ordinary American colleges (B-schools) where a average candidate like me would also stand a chance. I do not mind if they are NOT AASCB accredited, as long as that wont be a problem with my Visa chances (I am from India). I am specifically looking for colleges which have Spring/January start dates and have MBA programs which are preferably 1-1.5 years in course duration

Thank you very much.

Hi Sing,
Its difficult to assess your candidacy for MBA programs based solely on your GMAT score. Can you tell us more about your background - including GPA, Work Experience, other information.

Regards,

NP

my undergraduate degree is in engineering where i have a dismal record and a gpa of about 2.2/4

however i followed it up with an mba from a college in Singapore (degree awarded by an Australian university).

my gpa for the mba is about 6.5/10.

i have 2.5 years of work experience in india - 2 years in marketing in the hospitality industry and 0.5 years as a (technical) content writer for a software company.

Thank you.

Given the information you provided, you probably should consider a school in the top 50 - 75 range. However, I urge you to review the individual school stats to get a better idea of where you fit in. Usually top programs send individuals out to other countries to recruit students however I am not sure about lower ranked programs. You should definitely obtain letters of rec from professional managers as well as professors. Finally, one year MBA programs tend to be more intensive and therefore more competitive. You might want to consider part time programs if you do not want to be out of the workforce for 2 full years.
