Please evaluate my profile

by vcgmat » Thu Oct 01, 2009 3:13 pm
Background:
After completing bachelor of engineering (B.E) in 1998, joined the IT industry as a developer. Worked in india for sometime and then moved to United States on a assignment.
I have 12+ years of experience in the IT industry. Out of my 12 years of experience, 6 years have been in US and the rest in India.
I have worked with top IT consulting companies. In 12 years of my career, have played multiple roles from programmer analyst to project manager/architect and have worked with clients, mostly fortune 500 companies. I have about 4 years of experience as project manager and currently working as architect/consultant.

Aspirations:
I would like to accelerate my career to the next level (move on to Senior Mgmt positions). Hence would like to pursue my MBA from any of the top 20 universities in US/Canada. I am targetting mostly 1 year full time MBA programs.

Xtras:
As far as extra circular activities are concerned, I have been actively involved in community services and been working closely with a non-profit organization.

Target Schools:
Northwestern
Cornell
Emory
Queens (Canada)

Recently I gave gmat and was badly beaten by gmat - Scored 560 :-( . I am terribly disappointed and will be giving another attempt.
However, do I have to get like 740 to get into Kellogs or Conell, considering my background/profile and can I apply to apply schools with this score (560)?

Thanks !

Hi and thanks for your question. You have a lot of info (all of which is interesting: it sounds like you have had a lot of variety in the IT space) and it was all useful.

To answer your question, a 560 is going to be a pretty high hurdle to overcome, especially for the programs that you are talking about. I would think that the high 600s or low 700s is what you need to be shooting for.

What do you think your chances of scoring in that range is? Did something go wrong when you took the GMAT? Had you prepared enough?
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much for evaluating my profile.

Yes, I didn't prepare enough due to work pressure. However, I have been scoring mid 600s in my prep tests. I am targetting 700 for my second attempt.
