Building an Efficient Study Schedule

by docta13 » Sun Nov 16, 2008 1:00 pm
I know everyone is working with their own constraints for test date, hours available to study each week, and background in the test material...but I have 2 main things I'd like to open up for discussion.

1) Personally I have led an unstructured month of studying mostly quant material (as I've always been weak in math), but realized I have not touched any other section. Aiming to take the test roughly 2/1/09, I have to get in gear and start distributing my study focus across all sections. I've read most of this site and the blog, but I'd like to get specific examples of how people chose to divy up the sections over their period of study. Meaning, do you do something like:
Mon - Reading Comp
Tues - Problem Solving
Wed - Critical Reasoning
...etc

2) Is it more advisable to read over all OG how-to material and the answer explanations as a refresher prior to strictly doing practice problems?

Thank you in advance for your input.

I did the described study method suggested in bullet 1. I started off like you, but realized I was leaving significant gaps in my GMAT knowledge - success depends on covering all your bases not just one. Even if quant is a weakness you'll soon find that you have other weaknesses that also need to be worked.

In my opinion, reading explanations prior to doing the problems is a bad idea. You learn most from understanding your thought processes, comparing them to the thoughts of the solution, then augmenting your own knowledge - reading the explanations first removes this possibility. Practical application is necessary in addition to the theory.
