Hello

Please help evaluate my profile for the fall 2011 intake. Here's my details:

- Indian, male, 27 years
- Lawyer from India's top law school, GPA 4.58/ 7.0 (top 20% of class), other undergrad subjects include political theory, sociology, history and economics
- GMAT 710 (V 41 92%, Q 45 74%, AWA 6.0)
- (Currently) 4.5 years work experience - have worked with big names in the tech industry (Cisco, SAP) as an in-house counsel, also some private practice with clients largely in media and IT space
- Extra curricular activities include moot courts, debates, quizzes, drama
- Plenty of community work: 500+ hours of legal awareness programmes in underdeveloped areas, working with disadvantaged children, volunteer for a urban civic rights organisation

Why MBA? Looking for a career in strategy/ consulting.

Target schools - I am not looking at the best-of-the-best (i.e. HBS, Wharton, Stanford), but at schools ranked (on an average) between 5 and 15 (NYU, UCLA, Tuck, Georgetown). This list is very rough at this time, though.

I really appreciate any feedback :)

Dear redpassion,

I think you are a competitive candidate for the schools you are targeting. Your law experience should help to distinguish you from the other Indian applicants. The main question the admissions committees will have is why you want to make the career change and how you will leverage your law experience in your new career. If you can convey your rationale for an MBA effectively, as well as a solid action plan for achieving your goal of consulting, then you will be even more competitive for a seat in the class. You might want to consider at least one safety school in your mix, outside the top 25, just as a backup, but I think you do have a shot at one of your targets with a great set of essays and recommendations.

Good luck,
Lisa
