Graduation - 1st class (61%)
Masters GPA - 6.5/10

Hey there George,
Well I don't really have enough info here to say whether your profile is strong enough for Top 10. I am missing way way too much info, especially about WHAT you have actually done in your job, how much leadership you have, what your achievements were, whether or not you have international experience, and so on. Your GMAT is good, GPA so-so, and your applicant pool huge and tough and competitive, so top 10 may be a bit of a stretch, but if your work experience is truly strong, then you might have a shot.

If you can get back to me with more info, I can write more,

Thank you very much for your quick reply, Jon.
I started my career as an engineer (Data Recovery Services) in one of the Fortune 500 IT Companies and then progressed into lead a team of over 30 engineers spread across India, US, Argentina and Hungary in the IT infrastructure space. I was accountable for the delivery of IT services from these 4 delivery centers ( Some of the clients include Cisco, ATT, Ford Motor company, Starbucks etc)

I was also instrumental in setting up a Global Command center as a project lead - 8 members to start with and it grew into a 60 member team within 2 years - This project was a key strategic initiative of the organization to reach delivery targets of US $ 300 mn.

I was given the award of Technical Wizard at the practice level (about 8000 people in this practice) for my technical know-how and contribution to client success.

I have also engineered a few six sigma projects to improve productivity and efficiency.

Additionally, I hold a PMP ( project management professional) and a Prince2 certification in project management.

However, I do not have any international experience.

I am currently working as a Lead consultant for one of the Top MNCs. My work primarily focuses on reducing financial impact due to any IT infrastructure related issues.

Social Enterprise - We were able to impact about 80 micro entrepreneurs in 2 years, increase their monthly income by 20 - 45 %. We also did several business consulting engagements for small to mid-sized organizations. I have also delivered several key note speeches in various colleges about entrepreneurship, and trained few business leaders on entrepreneurship.

My goal in attending B-school is to improve my financial & marketing skills and to build a strong network of future global leaders.
Post my MBA, I plan to establish a company to design low-cost solutions to some of the pressing issues facing India and other developing countries such as sanitation, transportation etc
(Ex: 2 dollar toilet, 15 dollar transportation system etc)

Dear George,
Thanks a lot for the detail, it really helps. Okay, so I may not have the news you were looking for, but I'll be straight up with you. Top 10s are gonna be stretches. You have some excellent stuff in your profile, but it's very tech, with only project management (as opposed to leads), little international experience, and a very tough applicant pool.

Your goals are very interesting and your GMAT is fantastic, but Top 10s just have their choice of who they want to take and there are enough Indian candidates with better GPAs from better schools with leadership and international experience, that Top 10 schools don't have to make any compromises on the profile (although you could always stun them with your essays). I'd say if you expand your schools to Top 30, then you are being a lot more realistic. You can (and should) apply to 1-2 schools in the Top 10, but then add 4 more from the Top 30 OUT of the top if you want to have a good shot at getting accepted.

Remember that your goal is NOT to get into Wharton, but rather to get to your GOAL, which many other schools can help you reach. And you are staying in Top renowned programs.

I hope this helps,

George,

I think you are competitive for the bottom the Top 10 in the U.S.

You have a strong academic profile in that you graduated 1st class from a known strong undergraduate program (BITS Pilani) with a competitive GMAT score (compared to other Indian applicants to these programs).

Your work experience of co-founding a social enterprise is particularly attractive to schools like Duke (https://www.fuqua.duke.edu/student_resou ... eneurship/) and NYU Stern (https://www.stern.nyu.edu/programs-admis ... nterprise/).

Also, Columbia is a stretch. However, their accelerated-Term program is less competitive (https://www8.gsb.columbia.edu/programs-a ... nes/j-term) and you already have experience in your chosen path. Columbia lists their Social Enterprise Career/Course Map here (https://www8.gsb.columbia.edu/programs-a ... nes/j-term) where you can focus on Social Entrepreneurship combining classes that are more globally focused.

Good luck,
