"amounts" is plural so it should be follwed with exceed instead of exceeds. So A, B and C are out.
Among D and E, E seems to be correct because D's construction is awkward with "exceed far" .
So E is the answer.

Also E is closer to Original sentence...when in doubt IMO we shd place our bet to the option that is nearest to the original one.
