The main issue with answer choice E is that we need some sort of transition word to contradict "the climate in Europe is fairly humid".

We know that extreme temperature and humidity damage book collections. So the fact that European books last a long time is IN SPITE of the fact that Europe is fairly humid - even though Europe is humid, it isn't as extreme as the US, so books do better there.

E tells us "Books in European libraries last longer than books in libraries in the United States because the climate in Europe is fairly humid" - so the humid climate HELPS the books in European libraries do better than the books in US libraries. This doesn't make any sense, so we can eliminate E.
