Zeno's paradoxes

by vikram4689 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 8:48 am
Zeno's paradoxes are a set of problems generally thought to have been devised by Zeno of Elea to support Parmenide's doctrine that "all is one" and that, contrary to the evidence of our senses, the belief in plurality and change is mistaken, and in particular that motion is nothing but an illusion.
A. by Zeno of Elea to support Parmenide's doctrine that "all is one" and that, contrary to the evidence of our senses, the belief in plurality and change is mistaken, and in particular that motion
B. from Zeno of Elea to support Parmenide's doctrine that "all is one" and contrary to the evidence of our senses, the belief in plurality and change is mistaken, and in particular that motion
C. by Zeno of Elea supporting Parmenide's doctrine that "all is one" and that, contrary to the evidence of our senses, the belief in plurality and change was mistaken, and in particular motion
D. of Zeno of Elea in an attempt to support Parmenide's doctrine that "all is one" and that, despite our senses giving evidence to the contrary, the belief in plurality and change is mistaken, and in particular that motion
E. by Zeno of Elea for supporting Parmenide's doctrine that "all is one" and contrary to the evidence of our senses, the belief in plurality and change was mistaken, and in particular that motion

I got the answer correct but i guess there is one thing missing in correct answer as well

IMO A.

B/D - devised from and devised of are unidiomatic
C/E - don't maintain that parallelism
C/E - uses supporting - wrong tense as we are speaking about a generalized fact.

that "all is one" and that, contrary to the evidence of our senses, the belief in plurality and change is mistaken, and in particular that motion is nothing but an illusion.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

IMO answer could be any A/C/E.

If A is correct then we do not need THAT in "and that, contrary to the evidence of our senses, the.." If THAT is actually present in A then it means Zeno DOCTRINE talks about 3 separate things:
1) "all is one"
2) the belief in plurality and change is mistaken
3) motion is nothing but an illusion.

If sentence actually intend to shows 3 things (as a list)....then AND here in "and that, contrary to the evidence of our senses, the.." is NOT REQUIRED.

C/E - everything is fine except WAS in "the belief in plurality and change was mistaken". If WAS is correct then original sentence will have WAS in "motion is nothing but an illusion".

I am very curious to know the OA and OE. But since, the issue is same in both C & E - I will pick A.

I too picked A and OA is A BUT why "AND" is used before 2nd element of list
1) "all is one"
2) the belief in plurality and change is mistaken
3) motion is nothing but an illusion.

Also, for the 3rd that does "and in particular that" mean same as
1)"and,in particular, that"
2)"and that ,in particular, "
