I think the original sentence is correct.

B implies that returning to Africa symbolises freedom to him which is wrong, the land does.
C is wordy and convoluted.
D uses the apostrophe incorrectly in Black's
E again uses incorrect apostrophe and has modifier error.

Hope this is correct.
